Resort's residents fear losing beach PORT DICKSON: Residents at the Regency Tanjung Tuan Beach Resort are appealing to the authorities after a broken perforated pipe left them without a beach. It is understood that the sand-reclamation pipe broke down three years ago and is yet to be put right. It was used to retain sand and pump out water after sand-reclamation work nearby. Businessman Prabakaran Selvarajah, 60, said the pipe was built in 2005 to prevent sand being washed away, but it broke down in 2009. He said that caused the eroding which not only left residents without a beach but also created an ugly sight. "You can see the roots of trees exposed because the sand underneath has been washed away," he told the New Straits Times. He said the place was known to have one of the best beaches in the country and therefore the resort was touted as a good investment. "Even though the price of real estate here has gone up, what is going to happen when there is no beach left at all? The main draw of the resort will be gone." He said at one point, the sea water had flooded the car park and even reached the swimming pool. Prabakaran said residents wanted the broken pipe to be fixed and the extraction of sand from nearby hotels halted as a temporary measure to end the flooding. "We are taking sand from the hotel next to us because after the reclamation, the sand that is supposed to be at the Regency ends up being diverted to the other hotels." Businessman Daniel Charles, 52, said the government should take care of the beach in Port Dickson since it drew huge crowds because it was close to Kuala Lumpur. "The pipe that was working before should be maintained well along with the other facilities around the beach." |
