Part of a challenge I had to do today (Lita roped me into the Daily Challenge website; it's a feel-good and be-good-to-yourself kinda place) was to look up the history of the place where I live.

At first, I thought: Duh... this is Malaysia lah ... But, then I thought: why not?

This is the first thingy that popped up, and this is what I found, about the history of Port Dickson. I don't know how true this is - for that, I'd need to do some real checking and triangulation, but for now, this seems sorta right . . . . 

For sure, the original shop-houses are still there.








Brief History (Sejarah)

About a century ago, Port Dickson town was a part of the ocean, during the high water tide, the water might raise up to the railway near Jalan Lama. In those time, both streets of Jalan Baru and Jalan Raja Aman Shah did not yet exist.
In the earlier time, Port Dickson was called "Tanjong" in Malay language that means "cape". The oldest shoplots were the four situated at Jalan Lama. There was also carbon mine at first mile of the coast road (Jalan Pantai), and therefore Port Dickson was also called "Arang" in Malay language that means "charcoal".
In those time, the British have foreseen the great potential of Port Dickson, thus built a harbor in replacement for the existing port in Pengkalan Kempas. Because the in-charge officer's name was Dickson, thereafter it was named Port Dickson until today. In the picture, Jalan Baru was built in 1927. There were only 5 shop lots counting from today's Standard Chartered Bank.

For one, the main road out of town - Jalan Pantai (Coast Road) no longer 'hugs the coast' like the opening paragraph promises .... Though, it was true long, long ago. With land-reclamation, the beach and coast is a bit of a mess.

But, it is still a beautiful place. Especially when the weekend-and-holiday visitors are NOT around. Heheheeee. It is quiet, and rustic, and the people are lovely.  Chuan and I are so glad we moved here :)
